From atoms to nuclear chemistry. A full two-semester general chemistry course.
Chemistry 2e covers the scope and sequence of a typical two-semester general chemistry course. It starts from the basics of matter and measurement, then builds up through atomic structure, bonding, reactions, and the physical behavior of gases, liquids, and solids, before moving into equilibrium, thermodynamics, electrochemistry, and the descriptive chemistry of the elements. Before starting, comfort with basic algebra is helpful, since many sections include quantitative problem-solving.
The 21 chapters follow a logical progression, with each chapter building on ideas from the ones before it. The first half of the course (Chapters 1 through 11) covers the foundational concepts typically taught in the first semester: measurement, atomic and molecular structure, stoichiometry, bonding, and the states of matter. The second half (Chapters 12 through 21) covers the second-semester topics: kinetics, equilibrium, thermodynamics, electrochemistry, and descriptive and nuclear chemistry.
